Despite strict action and massive awareness campaigns, sexual exploitation of minor girls continues.
Balusseri police on Friday arrested a 44-year-old man on charges of sexually harassing a minor girl after allegedly marrying her as per religious rites.
The accused, Majeed, a native of Punoor, already has two wives. A local court in Kozhikode remanded the accused in judicial custody on Friday. According to Koduvally Inspector of Police E Sunil Kumar, who is in charge of Balusseri police circle, Majeed was taken into custody following an information from Childline and later arrested him on the basis of the girl’s complaint.
The 14-year-old girl is a student of a government upper primary school in Unnikulam panchayat. Police have found that Majeed had arranged a home on rent to the girl and her family.
Police said the incident was a clear case of sexual exploitation by utilising the poverty of the girl’s family. “The girl’s father had abandoned the family earlier and her mother had recently married again. Though 14 years old, she was studying in the sixth standard,” CI Sunil Kumar said.
Meanwhile, Childline centre coordinator P P Sulaiman said the girl’s mother was a victim of ‘Mysore Kalyanam’ and returned to Kozhikode only recently. “We understand that Majeed had paid a hefty sum to the girl’s stepfather for the marriage,” he said.
Police have slapped section 376 (punishment for rape) of the IPC and various sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, against the accused. The probe is progressing and more arrests are likely in the case.
