Clearing the confusion regarding the state's stand to be taken in the Supreme Court regarding the linking of Aadhaar card to LPG subsidies the government on Monday instructed the Advocate-General to take further steps only after the Cabinet discussed the affidavit.
The state government changed its stand after it learned that the current affidavit prepared at the official level was in favour of linking Aadhaar to cooking gas subsidy. Industries and IT Minister P K Kunhalikutty said the affidavit was prepared by the officials keeping the Cabinet in the dark.
“The state will only file the affidavit once the Cabinet gives the nod after discussing it at the ministerial level,” he said.
The Minister said the state government had requested the AG to seek more time to file the affidavit.
IT Department officials had prepared the affidavit without taking the Cabinet into confidence. In the affidavit it was pointed out that the Aadhaar card would ensure only eligible persons got the subsidy and would do away with middlemen and the possibility of people misusing documents.
The government, which always stood against the Aadhaar-LPG linkage without giving enough time for the consumers, had drawn criticism for preparing an affidavit in support of it.
The decision to withdraw the affidavit was taken following the last-minute intervention of the IT Minister.
