The people in the ‘Office ward’ of the Pallichal panchayat have proved that they can easily conquer the digital landscape.

Soon, Pallichal will also hold the status of being the first fully e-literate panchayat in the state.

The mission is as part of the recently-launched e-literacy programme, an initiative of the panchayat with the support of P N Panicker Foundation, Mithram Charitable Institute, NSS workers and other volunteers.

The programme is a

panchayat-centric one as the key role is played by the panchayat president and other council members.

In Pallichal, a typical village, there are around 52,000  families spread over 23 wards. However, the Office ward, the 14th ward, is the first one to achieve total e-literacy. The ward could achieve not only 100-per cent e-literacy but also women’s empowerment, as over 65 per cent of the learners were women.

They and other participants have gained basic knowledge in computer and became literate in a ten-hour training programme.

“While becoming a literate, one should learn how to put his/her signature and other basics. Here, the e-literacy programme gives training to individuals on the basics of computer such as handling of mouse, keyboard and other such tasks. At the end, it teaches one how to send an e-mail,” said Pallichal panchayat president K Rakesh.

In the first phase, the panchayat launched the initiative in Office ward, where a survey was held to identify the number of ‘e-illiterates.’ In the survey, as many as 262 people were  found to be illiterate regarding computers.

The process is now being carried out in other wards too.  With the mission becoming a success and getting completed, the 14th ward has secured the distinction of being a fully e-literate ward in a panchayat, the first to achieve the norm in the state.  The coordinators and the volunteers from various institutions and others are planning to take e-literacy to the masses on an unprecedented scale in the entire panchayat.

As per the plan of the officials, the e-literacy programme will be held in the entire panchayat so as to declare it a fully e-literate panchayat.

The declaration is expected to be made on March 1 this year.
