The proposed Supplyco Hyper Mall at Koothattukulam is getting delayed thanks to the apathy of Koothattukulam Panchayat authorities despite the project finding a mention in the Suburban Mall project of the Civil Supplies Department.
The mall mooted by former minister the late T M Jacob in 2011 as the first suburban mall in the state has hit a roadblock owing to the delay in getting land. More than two years after a 25 cent was identified for the project, the panchayat is yet to hand over the land to Supplyco owing infights and political uncertainty in the ruling Congress party.
Though Civil Supplies Minister Anoop Jacob, who is also the local MLA, offered all support for the project and said if the panchayat was ready to allot land, the Supplyco would open a hyper shopping mall at Koothattukulam in collaboration with the grama panchayat, there has been no effective move from the panchayat in this regard.
Panchayat member P B Saju of CPM said all developmental projects of the panchayat have come to a stand still owing to the political uncertainty within the ruling Congress party. Even two years after getting approval for the proposed hyper market and identifying land for the same, the project is moving at a snail’s pace.
“Though Anoop Jacob has offered all support for the project, the panchayat could not take a single step effectively in this regard,” he added.
Seema Johnson, panchayath president, has admitted that there was some delay in implementing the project owing to some political issue in the ruling front. “Though there was delay in taking effective steps, the civic body is on the way for completing the project in a time-bound manner. We have already forward a request before the Local Self Government Department (LSGD) for getting necessary sanction for handing over the land to Supplyco. While getting the nod, the project will be started and to be completed a time bond manner,” she added.
She added that an immediate meeting will be held with LSGD officials for taking steps to speed up the technical works in this regard.
