Thumpamon Thomas Passes Away

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Thumpamon Thomas, noted writer and former director of the State Institute of Encyclopaedic Publications, died here on Thursday. Thomas was 68 and had been ailing for some time.  The body was kept at his residence at Pandits Colony, Kowdiar, for the public to pay homage and later was taken to Thumpamon, Pathanamthitta, for the final rites.

He is survived by wife Prof Roshni Thomas, daughter Nirupama Thomas and son Arjun Thomas. The funeral will be held at the Ebenezer Mar Thoma Church, Chenneerkara, at 11 am on Saturday.  Thomas taught at the Mar Thoma College, Tiruvalla, for 33 years. He has served as member of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi and National Book Trust. He has also headed the State Institute of Children’s Literature. A former DCC secretary in Pathanamthitta, Prof Thumpamon Thomas started his political career through KSU and the Youth Congress.

As a writer, his major works include ‘Malayala Novelinte Puthiya Mukhangal,’ ‘Malayala Novelinte Verukal’ and ‘Kuttanadinte Ithihasakaran.’ Thomas is a recipient of numerous accolades, including the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award and the EV Award.

The Chief Minister, Cultural Affairs Minister K C Joseph were among those who paid their last respects to Thomas on Thursday.
