KANNUR: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Monday submitted the charge sheet in the case filed against 114 LDF activists including two CPM MLAs for attacking Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in Kannur on October 27.
Payyanur MLA C Krishnan and Dharmadam MLA K K Narayanan are the first and second accused, respectively, in the charge sheet submitted before the Kannur Judicial First Class Magistrate at 2 pm. According to SIT sources, the 1,384-page charge sheet lists 114 accused. A hundred accused persons had been arrested and the two MLAs were questioned in connection with the case. Twelve persons accused in the charge sheet, including DYFI district president Biju Kandakkai, are still absconding.
The SIT had taken case against 1,014 LDF activists and leaders in connection with the attack on the Chief Minister out of which 114 were charged. Five accused, who were directly involved in the stone pelting on the Chief Minister’s convoy, were charged with attempt to commit murder under section 307 of the IPC.
Others were charged under IPC sections 143, 144, 148, 343 and 120(B). The SIT maintained that the attack was “planned and politically motivated”. The probe team took statements from more than 250 witnesses including Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Rural Development Minister K C Joseph, Congress leaders K P Nooruddin, T Siddique, former Kannur SP Rahul R Nair and Kasargod SP Thomson Jose.
The attack on CM’s convoy took place near the Police Club here on the evening of October 27, 2013, when he visited Kannur to inaugurate the closing ceremony of the Kerala State Police Games. Stones were thrown at the Chief Minister’s car from among the LDF activists who had gathered there to black flag him.
