Dowry Issue: Centre Urged to Drop Move

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The move of the Central Government to amend the Indian Penal Code to punish those women who lodge false complaints in connection with dowry-related harassment issues, should be dropped, State Women’s Commission member Lissy Jose has urged.

In a statement she said this move will make Dowry Prohibition Act irrelevant. Dowry is often given without documents and it is difficult to prove payment of dowry if any. The move to amend IPC in this regard will prevent  women and their relatives from filing complaints against harassment related to dowry, she said.
