Kozhikode District Athletics Meet Cancelled Following Protest

KOZHIKODE: The District Athletics Meet at the Koyilandy Municipal Stadium was cancelled due to the protest staged by the Physical Education students against the alleged irregularities in the appointment of Physical Education teachers, on Wednesday.

Following the incident, Kozhikode became the latest to join the list of districts - Malappuram, Kottayam and Thrissur - which have cancelled the athletics meet following the protest.

“It is a grievous issue. We have to make our stand clear. The latest government move to appoint language teachers to the posts of physical education teachers is a gross injustice to us,” said Jyothi Kumar, ground and equipment director at the Koyilandy meet.

The Malappuram Revenue District meet that began at the Calicut University Stadium was abandoned without even a single event being held. The agitators, mainly the BPED students, took to the stadium, raising slogans against the appointment of 16 language teachers to PET posts. Though a mild agitation broke out during the Wayanad district athletics meet, the event continued without much ado. The district meet in Kannur will begin on Thursday.
