KANHANGAD: The police have arrested two schoolmates for the murder of Abhilash, 15, who was found dead in a pit filled with water in Hosdurg on Saturday.

They said Abhilash, a class 10 student of Government Higher Secondary School, Hosdurg, was drowned allegedly by the two in the pit. The two boys arrested are aged 15 and 17.

The police said one of them stabbed Abilash’s eye with a compass. “When Abhilash got down to the pit to wash the blood on his face, the two drowned him,” said a police officer. After ensuring he was dead, the two scattered Abhilash’s books and footwear, he said.

According to the police investigation, Abhilash and one of the accused were in love with a girl from the school, and they used to have frequent fights over it. On Friday evening, too, the boys picked up a fight on their way home, which ended in the murder of Abhilash.

The two accused were produced before the Juvenile Justice Board on Wednesday, and sent to an observation home.

The body of Abhilash was found in a water-filled pit formed after extracting sand, near a polytechnic at Kushal Nagar in Kanhangad on Saturday.

When he did not return home from school on Friday, the family launched an extensive search, and even looked in the pit after finding his bag and books near it.

Not finding any trace of Abhilash, the family approached the Hosdurg police station with a man-missing complaint.

According to the postmortem report and the police surgeon of Pariyaram Medical College, Abhilash died of drowning. They did not suspect any foul play.

Initially, the police, too, suspected the boy might have slipped and drowned in the pit. However, that theory was rubbished by the residents and family, saying that Abhilash, son of Suresh, a fisherman residing near Hosdurg beach,  was an ace swimmer.

The residents launched massive protests and a march to the police station in Kanhangad on Tuesday, and demanded the police to bring out “real cause” of the death.

Various political parties and organisations also joined the people to press for a thorough efficient probe. Following the protests, the police questioned the schoolmates and arrested them.
