KASARGOD:  Paul claimed the best drones in India could fly up to only 40 minutes. “Even the DRDO’s surveillance quadcopter Netra can fly only for 30 minutes on a single battery charge,” he said.

The team, comprising Shine Sreedhar (innovation lead), Vipin Mathew (technical co-coordinator) and Dona Mani (robotics engineer), said it was testing a drone resistant to water. “In our second stage, we will make the prototype. We are tying up nearly `10 lakh to build one to Amazon’s specs,” said Baby.

In July, the Seattle-based online retailer wrote to the US Federal Aviation Authority seeking permission to test drones that could fly at up to 80kmph and for 30 minutes at a time to deliver packages weighing up to 2.3kg.

Germany’s DHL has beaten both Amazon and Google by starting a regular drone delivery service in September. Both Amazon and DHL announced the “sci-fi service” last December.
