KOCHI: The KSRTC decision to suspend a driver for allegedly sleeping while on duty during his trips from Bengaluru to Ernakulam has raised a hue and cry within the Corporation. The decision was taken following complaints from passengers that the driver, A S Boban, took a nap when the bus reached Kumara Palayam toll plaza.

According to the suspended driver, the decision was unfair especially as the KSRTC has appointed only a single driver to operate on the stretch for 12 to 13 hours, which was a risky affair.

He pointed out that this was against the norms of the Volvo company which has handed down rules that drivers should be entitled to proper rest during the journey. “If there were two drivers, one could take the steering when the other felt tired. But the KSRTC stand on the issue is not right. It has  appointed only a single driver,” he said.
