Tension stirs up after the decision to display body of killed Maoists in Kozhikode

Yuva Morcha activists launched a protest at the spot to prevent the human rights activists from displaying the bodies, which were kept at Government Medical College.

KOZHIKODE: Following a group of human rights activists’ decision to keep the bodies of suspected Maoists killed in Nilambur encounter on public display, tension prevailed at Pottamel in the city on Friday as Yuva Morcha activists led by BJP leaders came out against the move.

Police said that the activists led by A Vasu (GROW Vasu) wanted to keep the bodies on public display protesting against the killing, alleging that it was a fake encounter. "We have not given any permission and they will not be allowed to keep the bodies on public display," said a senior police officer.

Meanwhile, Yuva Morcha activists launched a protest at the spot to prevent the human rights activists from displaying the bodies, which were kept at Government Medical College after conducting post mortem.

It was on November 24, 2016 that a special operation team of Kerala Police rounded up a group of Maoists deep inside Nilambur forest. While a few managed to escape, the combing teams killed two cadres including a senior Maoist leader in the ensuing fire exchange. The deceased were identified as Kuppu Devaraj and Ajitha.

Devaraj, 61, was a central committee member of CPI-Maoist and Ajitha, a state-level leader from Tamil Nadu.
