KANNUR: Tension prevailed outside a bank in Kelakom town here for around two hours on Tuesday morning as some customers tried to forcefully enter the bank premises.

Banks opened on Tuesday after the three consecutive holidays. At 9 AM, there was a queue of over 50 customers outside the Kelakom branch of Federal bank, nearly 70 kms away from Kannur. They had come as early as 8 AM for withdrawing the money.

However, they got agitated when the staff expressed their inability to dispose the money as they did not receive enough due to the holidays.

The customers, furious on learning this, protested outside the bank, while others tried to push in the security and enter the bank.

As soon as the word spread, people started gathering outside the bank. Even though a 10-member team led by Kelakom sub inspector reached the spot to alleviate the tension, the mob refused to disperse. Later, senior bank officials reached the spot and carried out a discussion with the staff as well as the customers.

The bank officials then gave tokens to the customers who were in the queue and assured them to provide the cash on Wednesday.
