‘Ragging’ fallout: CUSAT student battles for life

A Marine engineering student of CUSAT in Kochi and native of Trikaripur is battling for life after he tried to kill himself purportedly over ragging.

KASARGOD: A Marine engineering student of CUSAT in Kochi and native of Trikaripur is battling for life after he tried to kill himself purportedly over ragging.

Ashish Thampan P V, 18, son of P V Thampan of Eyakkad in Trikaripur consumed pesticide on Tuesday night and is in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Mangaluru. Chandera police said they went to the hospital to take the boy’s statement but could not do it as, “he was not in a position to speak.”

His father has written to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan for action against the abetters. Before taking the step, the teenager left a post on  Facebook. “I joined the course after yearning for it a lot. But the animals there caused me lot of physical and mental torture. Tanx (sic),” he wrote in Malayalam. He went on to name five friends, “and many whose name I don’t know” and teachers and thanked them. “The rest remember, you have destroyed my life”. He posted the message at 2.54 pm on Tuesday.
