Ragging case: Accused students charged with attempt to murder

KOTTAYAM: The police team probing the case related to the ragging of two students of Govt Polytechnic College, Kottayam, revised the charges against the accused on Saturday after the medical reports revealed that the victims had suffered serious injuries. The police have slapped various charges, including IPC 307 (attempt to murder), against the accused.

According to sources, the police have taken eight accused students into custody and are likely to record their arrest on Sunday.

It was on December 2 night that nine first-year students of Govt Polytechnic College, Nattakom, were brutally ragged by a gang of senior students at the men’s hostel of the college, under the leadership of a former student.

Among the nine students, Avinash, hailing from Iringalakkuda in Thrissur, and Shaiju D Gopi, from Cheranallur, Ernakulam, were seriously injured and were admitted to a private hospital in Thrissur and Ernakulam General Hospital respectively.

Sources said the students were forced to drink undiluted alcohol, which left Avinash with serious kidney damage.

He reportedly underwent dialysis as well. Later, his father Sivadasan filed a complaint at the Chingavanam police.Meanwhile, Shaiju, who was physically worn out after the incident, lodged a complaint at Cheranallur police station, which was later forwarded to the Chingavanam police.

Police have registered two separate cases against third-year students Abhilash and Manu and second-year students Nidhin, Praveen, Saran, Jerin, Rayson and Jayaprakash.Changanassery CI Binu Varghese told ‘Express’ that apart from the Kerala Prohibition of Ragging Act, they have slapped IPC 307 and charges under Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act on the accused based on the complaint filed by Avinash.

“We are discussing about revising the charges against the accused in the second case,” he said.

The police team collected evidences from the hostel and college. They have also recorded the statement of the college principal C G Anitha. Meanwhile, all the accused students have been suspended from the college.
