THIRUVANATHAPURAM: In what could be a setback to the opposition front, the special vigilance court of Thiruvananthapuram on Friday ordered quick verification into the nepotism charges against seven former ministers including former chief minister Oommen Chandy, and two legislators -- one an MLA in the previous UDF government.

The court asked the Vigilance to submit a quick verification report before February 6.

The legislators who face the probe are former finance minister K M Mani, former ministers K C Joseph, Ramesh Chennithala (who is now the leader of the Opposition in Kerala Assembly), Anoop Jacob, V S Sivakumar, P K Jayalakshmi, M Vincent MLA and former MLA R Selvaraj.

The Vigilance will take a decision on registering the FIR against them based on the findings in the preliminary probe.  In the quick verification, Vigilance will verify whether the accused persons had violated any service rules or guidelines for nepotism.

Recently, E P Jayarajan, industry and sports minister in the LDF government, had to step down after he faced nepotism charges.

The vigilance court had given the orders for inquiry after it received several petitions against the alleged widespread nepotism in the previous UDF government.
