'Centre Should Intervene'

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:  Fishermen organisations have demanded that the Centre ensure that Massimiliano Latorre, one of the two Italian marines accused of killing two Indian fishermen in 2012, is brought back to India for trial.

“The government should take up the matter with the UN and ensure that the marine is brought back,” T Peter, secretary, National Fishworkers’ Forum, said.

The demand comes in the wake of the head of the Italian Senate’s defence committee announcing that Latorre will not be returning to India.

“The Italian government has thrown a challenge to India and Indian fishermen by adopting such a stand. Why is the Indian government remaining silent?” he said.
