Anacondas not coming to 'Thrissur' anytime soon

THRISSUR: THE plans for bringing in two Anacondas to Thrissur Zoo from the menagerie in Thiruvananthapuram has been put on the back burner following the allocation made in the revised Budget to relocate the zoo here to Puthur, said T V Anilkumar, Superintendent, Thrissur Zoo. A sum of `150 crore had been set apart for the purpose in the revised Budget presented by Finance Minister Dr T M Thomas Isaac.

According to him, “The project had been held up on account of the Assembly polls in May. Now, the new government has decided to shift the zoo to Puthoor. If we press ahead with the plans to construct the enclosure for the giant reptiles it will turn out to be a sheer waste of money. There are seven Anacondas at Thiruvananthapuram Zoo. They need special facilities like air-conditioned enclosures”.

“ Minister of Forest, Animal Husbandry and Zoos K Raju  is slated to visit the district during the coming week for discussions on Puthoor Zoo,”  T V Anilkumar said, adding, “The museum will witness large-scale development when the process of shifting the zoo gets over, with an aquarium and a wax museum on the cards”.
