Man found dead in police custody in Kerala

MALAPPURAM: A 45-year-old man who was held in connection with theft cases was found dead under mysterious circumstances in the toilet of the Wandoor police station, near here, on Sunday. 

Abdul Latheef, a resident of Pallikunnu, Wandoor, was brought to the police station for interrogation in connection with nine theft cases in the early hours of Sunday, district police chief Debasish Behra said. While being in custody, Latheef asked the police to use the toilet at the station. But when he did not return from the toilet for quite some time, the police grew suspicious. Later the police searched for him in the toilet and found him hanging in hook at the ceiling of the toilet at about 11 am. Latheef used his ‘mundu’ to hang himself. Though the police took him to a nearby hospital, he was pronounced brought  dead by the doctors.

Behra said a probe was on into the incident and the postmortem examination would be video-graphed.
