THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A 57-year-old woman was robbed and raped by an unidentified youth at her residence at Valiyathura near here, early on Saturday. Her neighbours suspect some youth in the locality.
The woman was unmarried and lived alone, police said. "The incident occurred around 4.30 a.m. but there was no evidence of a break-in. Preliminary inquiry suggests that the accused would have entered the house the previous day or night," Valiyathura sub-inspector Jayaprakash said.
Jayprakash said, "The accused first demanded the woman’s money, and she gave him her ear rings worth half a sovereign and Rs 2000 in cash. Later, he overpowered and raped her," he added.
The police have gained some clues on the accused from the woman’s description. "An intensive investigation is on and we hope to book him soon," Jayprakash added.
