MK Muneer selected as legislative leader of Indian Union Muslim League in Kerala

Former minister and son of former chief minister CH Mohammed Koya, Dr MK Muneer, has been selected as the legislative leader of Indian Union Muslim League.

KOZHIKODE: Former minister and son of former chief minister CH Mohammed Koya, Dr MK Muneer, has been selected as the legislative leader of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) in Kerala Assembly.

The Parliamentary Party meeting of the IUML held at Panakkad in Malappuram on Saturday unanimously selected the 54-year-old as the leader of the legislative party.

A doctor by profession, Muneer had held the posts of secretary of Kerala State Muslim League, president of State Muslim Youth League and councillor of Kozhikode Corporation. He was elected to Kerala Assembly in 1991, 1996, 2001 and 2011. He was a member of the cabinets led by AK Antony and Oommen Chandy between 2001 and 2006 and held the portfolio of social welfare in the Oommen Chandy ministry from 2011-16.

Muneer has been selected after the present leader PK Kunhalikutty got elected to Lok Sabha from the Malappuram bypolls following the death of E Ahamed. Kunhalikutty will resign as MLA on April 27.
