KOLLAM: Three youths drowned at Kandachira Lake near Mangadu in the wee hours of Sunday. It is believed the youths drowned after the fibre boat in which they had gone fishing capsized.

The deceased have been identified as Y Monish, 27, of Thodiyilkavu Veedu near Mangadu; Dominic Saviyo, 29, of Pillaveettil Padinjatathil, Janani Nagar in Karikkode, and T Tony, 28, of Thrikkadavoor. Monish and Dominic were drivers in a private firm in Kollam.

“We were alerted by the locals at around 8 am,” said an officer from the Anchalummoodu Police Station.

“We found remains of alcoholic drinks and food from the boat. It seems they were in an inebriated state.
The preliminary investigation shows Monish and Dominic had gone fishing with their friend Tony, a fisherman, in his fibre boat on Saturday night. Somehow, their boat capsized and the three drowned; apparently, only one of them knew how to swim.”

Police also suspect the accident could have been caused by strong winds and rains which raged in the wee hours of Sunday. Anchalummodu SI Devarajan said a case of suspicious death has been registered and police have begun the investigation. The bodies were released to relatives after an autopsy at the Kollam district hospital.
