KOCHI: The creation of a ‘new Kerala’ will be possible only through the progress of the agricultural sector. If ‘Nava Kerala’ has to become a reality, we need to realise the significance of farming. The state observes Farmer’s Day to attain this goal.

The government has a declared policy to ensure more intensive farming without harming nature and the soil. The state should be able to promote farmers through various measures like nature-friendly farming.

The government has already initiated various steps for the conservation of land and water - the two basic requisites for agriculturists. Efforts are on to become self-sufficient in vegetable cultivation and milk production. After the Left Government came to power, paddy cultivation has been extended to more areas. The government have been successful in promoting organic farming and vegetable cultivation as well.

Kerala has increased the budget allocation for the agriculture sector. Also, various welfare measures - including pension for farmers - are being effectively implemented. The government aim to extend paddy cultivation to three lakh hectares. To ensure better agricultural practices, the state have been imparting training to farmers in modern farming methods.
