College principal arrested

The police on Monday arrested the principal of IPMS College of Aviation in Thiruvananthapuram in connection with the case of caste abusing that led to suicide attempt of a student at Karipur. 

MALAPPURAM: The police on Monday arrested the principal of IPMS College of Aviation in Thiruvananthapuram in connection with the case of caste abusing that led to suicide attempt of a student at Karipur. According to the police, Deepa Manikandan, 45, was taken into custody from Coimbatore by a special police team on Sunday night. A case was registered against her for abetting the crime and extending help for the accused in the case.

Malappuram DySP Jaleel Thottathil, who is heading the probe, said Deepa was absconding after the case was registered.The case was registered on December 4 after a girl from Thiruvananthapuram attempted suicide after she underwent caste abuse from her friends. The girl tried to jump out of a lodge at Karipur, where she was staying. According to the Kondotty police, the girl, who is a student of a private aviation institute, came to Calicut International Airport as part of training.

On December 7, five students, Neethu,19, Athira, 19, Shaija, 19, Vaishnavi, 19, and  Shalu,19, were arrested in connection with the case.  A case has been registered under various charges, including Prevention of Atrocities Against SC/STs.
