THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Central government is planning to make Sainik Schools more affordable, said Lieutenant General Sarath Chand, Vice Chief of Army Staff. He was speaking after reviewing the passing out parade of Class XII cadets at Sainik School Kazhakootam here on Saturday. At present, Sainik Schools charge more than Rs 1 lakh per annum from students studying in Classes VI to XII.Lt Gen Chand said Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will announce the details of the government’s plan soon.

Lt Gen Chand, an alumnus of Sainik School Kazhakootam, also revealed that the Central government will open more Sainik Schools for girls. A Sainik School for girls has been set up in Mizoram on a trial basis. As many as 85 cadets, including a girl, took part in the colourful passing out parade after undergoing seven years of academic and military oriented training at the school.

School cadet captain Piyush V commanded the parade. Lt Gen Chand took the salute and reviewed the parade. Lt Gen Cherish Mathson, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Jaipur-based South Western Command, was the chief guest. Two T-55 battle tanks were dedicated to the school by the two lieutenant generals. The tanks will soon go on display at the entrance of the school.

The medal for the best all-round cadet was shared by school cadet captain Piyush and Muhammed Shah. The medal for the best cadet for academics was awarded to cadet Manoj Kumar. Cadet Vikash Kumar was awarded the medal for the best all-round sportsman. A total of 14 students from the school have qualified for the prestigious National Defence Academy.

Air Vice-Marshal Richard John Duckworth of the Southern Air Command; Major General Anoop Kumar, Additional Director General, NCC; Brigadier Arun C G, Station Commander, Pangode Military Station; School Principal Colonel A Rajiv; Vice-Principal Lt Cdr Parichay Kalra and Administrative Officer Lt Col B Girish Kumar  were also present on the occasion.A large number of invitees, including parents, former students and teachers, came to witness the parade.
