KOCHI: The temperature inversion, which has been noted in Kochi, has resulted in the forming of radiation fog and it is one of the main reasons for the smog covering the city landscapes in recent days, according to experts.“Since there is a lot of water content in the air, the radiation fog forms overnight as the air near the ground cools, stabilises and traps the pollutants and other particles in the air which later causes reduced visibility,” said Cusat research scientist M G Manoj.

As many as 10 flights were diverted at the Cochin International Airport the other day due to poor visibility. Temperature inversion is one of the main reasons for the issue, said experts. The impact of Cyclone Ockhi which still lingers would be over in a couple of days. Once the temperature becomes normal, the weather will improve, he said, adding it is currently 2 degree Celsius colder than normal due to the cloudy sky.
