Measures in place to fight drought in Kerala: Water Resources Minister

KOCHI: Water Resources Minister Mathew T Thomas said on Wednesday the state had taken measures to fight the effects of drought.

Instructions have been given on resuscitation of water sources and construction of bunds, he told mediapersons in Kochi after reviewing the measures taken to fight drought in Ernakulam, Idukki, Alappuzha and Kottayam districts.

Thomas said the decreased rainfall and the disregard shown by neighbouring states to inter-state water treaties were the reasons for the drought in the state.

“The state has been at the losing end of disregard for water treaties at Parambikulam and Azhiyar projects. The chief minister will hold a meeting  to discuss the issues tomorrow,” he said.

The minister said alternative measures would be taken if the existing water sources are inadequate to meet the state’s demands.

As many as 5,500 borewells will be revived and they will be commissioned between February 15 and 20. Also, 556 new borewells will be set up in Idukki, 281 in Kottayam, 260 in Ernakulam and 22 in Alappuzha. Each of the four districts will get 24 new micro water supply projects too.

mportance will be given to drinking water in the case of a drought, Thomas said. “We are equipped to provide enough clean drinking water throughout the state. Considering that the people depend on consumption of purified water distributed by KWA, measures have been taken to store enough water at all facilities available. The Water Resources Department will provide water to all the kiosks set up in each wards.”

The minister also had a word of advice to the people. “Water resource is becoming scarce and the public should understand that. We need to let go of many of the practices we followed when water was in abundance,” he said.
