VS lashes out against delay in investigating corruption cases

Veteran CPM leader V S Achuthanandan lashed out against the undue delay in investigation and disposal of corruption cases.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Veteran CPM leader V S Achuthanandan lashed out against the undue delay in investigation and disposal of corruption cases.

Taking an apparent dig at the Vigilance Department, he criticised the drag in the investigation in corruption cases. Referring to the long delay in palmolein import and titanium cases, he said there is an undue d elay in the trial in the decade-old corruption cases.

“These cases move from one court to another. In many cases final verdict is not issued even after the death of the accused. There are allegations that the investigation in corruption cases are dragging. Once it reaches  the court, the final disposal gets indefinitely delayed due to various limitations. In effect the corrupt are escaping unhurt,” said Achuthanandan.

Inaugurating a seminar on ‘civil service and corruption: Need to maintain transparency’ in the city on Monday, the Administrative Reforms Commission chairman stressed on efficient bureaucracy to take the government’s initiatives to the public. Though employees’ associations stand for effective civil service, it’s a fact that all employees have not come to this motto, he said.

VS opined that many who preach against corruption, fail to take effective action when they become part of the system. “Many of us preach against corruption. But when they become part of the system, they fail to practice what they preach. There may point out legal or technical reasons. But at the end there’s no action,” he said.

Referring to the term public servants, VS said employees are meant to serve the public. Employees should introspect whether they work with this attitude. Stating corruption charges come up against bureaucrats naturally, the former Chief Minister reminded the political leadership about its responsibility.
