Arrests made based on suicide note of victim of moral policing

PALAKKAD : The suicide note of Aneesh, who was assaulted and then harassed on social media in a case of moral policing, mentions the name Dhanesh Ramesh as being responsible for his death. 


Though initially the police thought these were the names of two persons, they later found Ramesh is the name of Dhanesh’s father, sources said.  Agali police station sub-inspector S Subin told Express a case has been charged against Dhanesh under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) based on the note.

He said the post-mortem was conducted at the district hospital, Palakkad, and Aneesh’s body was handed over to his relatives. 


The Agali police will coordinate with the Karunagapally police in the probe and will decide on whether fresh cases must be slapped on the four others accused in the assault case, Subin said.


Aneesh, a 24-year-old from Karrara in Attappadi, and his female friend were attacked by a group of five men at the Azheekal beach in Kollam on February 14. Aneesh’s relatives said he had been gloomy and despondent after the incident.


After the assault, the accused and their friends posted video of the youth and his friend and made offensive comments on social media. Aneesh stopped talking to his friends and going out of his house after the attackers posted the images for a second time on social media. 


He was found hanging from a tree near his house at 6 pm on Thursday (February 23) evening. Relatives of the deceased demanded murder charges be slapped on the five accused in the case. The State Human Rights Commission has registered a case in the incident, seeking a report from the superintendents of police of Palakkad and Kollam police. The five persons arrested by the Kollam police are Biju, Abhilash, Dhanesh, Gireesh and Aneesh. 


The victims had filed a complaint with the Kollam city police Commissioner S Satheesh Bino immediately after the incident.


The arrested are charged under Sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (punishment for rioting),354C (voyeurism), 294B (using obscene words),324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of IPC along with section 119 (punishment for atrocities against woman) of Kerala Police Act and section 66E (punishment for violation of privacy) of IT Act.


Aneesh completed his schooling in Kollam and had a BCom degree from the IHRD College in Attappadi. He and the girl from Sooranad used to take computer classes for adivasi students at Vallikavu in Kollam.
