Vigilance Court orders further probe against E P Jayarajan

During further investigation, the Vigilance will check the involvement of more CPM leaders in the case.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Special Vigilance Court here on Saturday directed the VACB to conduct further probe into the nepotism charges against former Industries Minister E P Jayarajan. The court granted permission for the Vigilance to conduct a detailed probe against Jayarajan after it submitted the quick verification report against him.

The court decision assumed significance as the concluding session of the crucial CPM central committee meeting was held in the city on Saturday. During further investigation, the Vigilance will check the involvement of more CPM leaders in the case.

Vigilance had registered an FIR against Jayarajan on Friday by arraigning him as the first accused while P K Sudheer Nambiar, son of P K Sreemathi MP, and Additional Chief Secretary (Industries) Paul Antony have been arraigned as second and third accused, respectively. In the report, the agency said that Jayarajan had abused his position by appointing relatives in plum posts in the public sector units which come under the Industries Department. Sources in the Vigilance said the case was registered against Jayarajan for ‘violating due process of selection’ in appointing Sudheer as the managing director of Kerala State Industrial Enterprises Ltd.

Deepthi Nishad, another close relative of Jayarajan, also had to resign from the post of General Manager of Kerala Clays and Ceramic Products Ltd in Kannur. The Opposition had alleged that Deepthi, daughter-in-law of Jayarajan’s elder brother, was appointed in the PSU without the requisite qualification.
The Vigilance officials said Jayarajan had committed offences under Section 13 (1) (d) and 13 (2) of Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 120 (B) (Punishment of criminal conspiracy) of Indian Penal Code.
