Kerala self-financing college staff association demand law to prevent exploitation

The college managements, which deny women teachers maternity leave, were also not willing to take them back in service, the association alleged.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Alleging that teachers and staff of self-financing colleges were forced to work as peons and sweepers, the Self-Financing College Teachers and Staff Association (SFCTSA) on Saturday demanded that a piece of legislation be enacted to prevent their exploitation.

Addressing a news conference, the association office- bearers said some teachers were working for less than Rs 5,000 a month. The college managements, which deny women teachers maternity leave, were also not willing to take them back in service, they alleged.

Some colleges were not giving salary for the past many months and were also denying Provident Fund, Employees’ State Insurance and gratuity. The managements were giving increments at their will and some were not giving any increments at all, they said.

“If anyone protests against such atrocities, they have to face salary cuts or will be physically tortured. There is no specific time limit for the work of teachers in these colleges,” SFCTSA general secretary Abdulwahab said.

Those who are doing exam work are not getting their  benefits  allowed by the university. Wahab also alleged that principals were appointed by the managements at their will.

In the place of qualified and experienced faculty, the management is appointing retired teachers who are willing to work with low salary. The association alleged if a student is not wearing  uniform properly or sports a beard or stubble, the teacher-in-charge of the class has to pay Rs 1,000 as fine.

The norms and conditions of Khader Mangad Commission on pay and service conditions were not implemented by any university, the association alleged.
