THRISSUR: Road safety mascot Pappu Zebra will soon get the support of four friends to spread the message further and follow up on the good work done so far. They are two girls named Rekha and Sradha and two boys, Jeevan and Samay.

Rekha, meaning ‘lines’, represents the rules to be followed on roads; Sradha, which stands for ‘alert’, highlights the different situations to be faced on roads; Jeevan, meaning ‘life’, portrays the lives that are to be secured on roads; and Samay, for ‘time’, represents the time saved on the road.

These four friends will be working in tandem with Pappu in the road safety and awareness programmes organised by the Motor Vehicles Department, Kerala Police and Orgpeople India Foundation. The new mascots were created by artist Nandan Pillai, who was also behind Pappu Zebra.

“Former Indian cricketer S Sreesanth will inaugurate the ceremony at St Mary’s College, Thrissur on Wednesday at 10.30 am, where the four friends will be introduced to the public via tholpavakoothu,” said Smitha Sanjay, an office-bearer of Orgpeople India Foundation.

President’s medal winner and master of tholpavakoothu Ramachandra Pulavar will be leading the presentation. The show will depict how the four friends set out on roads and get terrified by the haphazard traffic. It will then explain how by following traffic rules, a sensible society can be developed.
