Wrong HIV test result stuns haemophilia patient

In a grave incident of negligence, a private medical laboratory in the city has given the blood test report of a youth wrongly as HIV positive.

KOZHIKODE: In a grave incident of negligence, a private medical laboratory in the city has given the blood test report of a youth wrongly as HIV positive. District Medical Officer-in-charge Asha Devi said she would inquire into the incident if the youth files a complaint against the laboratory located near the medical college.

“The youth has not given a complaint yet. We cannot act against the laboratory. If the youth files a complaint, we will inquire into it and give a report to the District Collector,” she said. The wrong report was given to a 19-year-old haemophilia patient from Kottakkal, Malappuram, who came for blood transfusion at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital on Wednesday. While using cannula, a thin tube inserted into a vein to administer transfusion, a bruise was caused by a syringe to a male nurse in the hospital. The nurse reported the incident to the doctor who suggested an elisa test for the youth.

The family of the youth went to a private medical laboratory which examined the blood and said the youth is HIV positive. The doctor suggested another elisa test which was done in another lab. The result was HIV negative. Another test done at the MCH lab confirmed the second report.
