KOTTAYAM: Geevarghese Mar Coorilos, Metropolitan of Niranam diocese, on Monday proposed  mediatory talks to resolve the dispute between Jacobite and Orthodox Church factions even as he said the issue cannot be settled through an order of the Supreme Court. Coorilos told reporters on the sidelines of a book launch here  he expected the state government to take the necessary initiatives for this.

“In a country like India, we have failed to implement several court orders with regard to faith and belief including the one on Ayodhya. Even the government is fully aware of the practical difficulties involved in implementing the court order. Hence, the efforts to reach a compromise through mediation. We hope they will do it amicably,” he said. Nonetheless, Coorilos said majority section’s interests should be factored in while arriving at a decision.

“At present, there is little scope of the two factions coming together. Since there are disputes and differences in belief, we ought to remain as two Church factions. However, the cases should be withdrawn and ownership of Churches decided on the basis of majority,” he said.
