SC refuses to stay Kerala check dam projects on Bharani river

But the apex court demanded an undertaking from the state that water flow to Tamil Nadu would not be affected if the dams are constructed.

NEW DELHI:The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to stay Kerala’s check dam projects at Attappady and Pattissery across the Bhavani river, a tributary of Cauvery. But the apex court demanded an undertaking from the state that water flow to Tamil Nadu would not be affected if the dams are constructed.

Shekhar Naphade, appearing for Tamil Nadu, argued Kerala was violating the quantity of water, prescribed by the Cauvery tribunal, to build check dams for its irrigation projects, thwarting the water flow to TN.

“Due to this, Tamil Nadu’s western part is facing acute shortage of water for irrigation and other requirements,” said Naphade.

However, the Kerala counsel said the state was not using the Cauvery water to build the dam or the irrigation project and care would be taken to maintain the water level.
