THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:The Cantonment police on Wednesday registered a case against around 25 SFI workers for allegedly assaulting three persons, including Puliyarakonam ward councillor, and vandalising his car at Jacob’s Junction.

According to police, the incident took place around 3 pm at Jacob’s Junction when  councillor Ajithkumar who is also a Yuva Morcha activist, returned from the junction with his two friends after visiting the Canara bank.  As they entered the car, the back glass of the car shattered into pieces after a suspected SFI worker hurled a helmet at the vehicle.
Following this, a group surrounded the car and started breaking the windshield of the car. This led to a scuffle and the three men were manhandled. The assailants fled the spot immediately.

“This could be a retaliatory action of SFI workers who are suspected to be from University College or Sanskrit College. Efforts are on to trace the culprits. So far, two persons have been identified.
“They are Niyas and Sukesh. We are on the process of identifying more people and they will be arrested soon,” said a police officer attached to Cantonment station.
The Yuva Morcha activists also took out a march later in the day to Secretariat demanding the arrest of the alleged SFI workers.
The accused have been booked under Section 143, 147, 148, 149, 323, 324 of Indian Penal Code which pertained to various offences including unlawful assembly, rioting, and voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from discharging his duty, an official said.
