CPM meet picks holes in Kerala govt’s functioning

Close on the heels of the LDF gearing up for the Malappuram byelection terming it a referendum on the Pinarayi Government.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:Close on the heels of the LDF gearing up for the Malappuram byelection terming it a referendum on the Pinarayi Government, the government drew severe flak at the CPM state secretariat for its failure to rise up to people’s expectations.

The two-day CPM secretariat which met in the presence of general secretary Sitaram Yechury and politburo members Prakash Karat and S Ramachandran Pillai witnessed big criticism against the government’s functioning. The police drew the biggest flak. Some police officers try to tarnish the government’s image. Some of them behave as if the UDF is still in power, it was alleged.

Constant controversies related to various departments and  issues affect the government’s image. Some ministers don’t come up to the expected standards. The open fight between senior officers also came up. Controversies surrounding the police and vigilance should be avoided. Otherwise it will affect the government’s image, it was pointed out.

Lapses in the functioning of several departments were raised. Though the government has formulated many projects, the benefits do not reach the people. The four major missions Haritha Kerala, Life, Ardram and Comprehensive Education Mission are yet to benefit the common man.

Yechury told reporters if there are lapses they will be corrected. Elaborating on the ongoing assessment of the government, he said a close watch on the government and  review have been going on. The party has been conducting periodical evaluation of the government, said Yechury. Other political parties should also do the same, he said.

“We will fulfil the promises given to the people during the election. Any lapses they will be corrected.  However, there are many factors which should be taken into consideration. The IAS - IPS officers are Central officers. The Central government is antagonising the LDF government,” said Yechury when asked about the failure on the part of the Chief Minister, who holds the Home portfolio, in controlling the police.

The next central committee meeting in April will take a call on the nepotism charges against former minister E P Jayarajan. “The party will live up to expectations,” said Yechury. He, however, refused to disclose whether the state leadership has submitted its report on the nepotism row.

The two-day state committee will begin on Saturday.
