Ranju gets a roof over her head after Kerala building firm extends helping hands

In a humanitarian gesture, a Kothamangalam-based firm has constructed a house for a woman and her two-year-old daughter free of cost.

THRISSUR: In a humanitarian gesture, a Kothamangalam-based firm has constructed a house for a woman and her two-year-old daughter free of cost.

Ranju and her daughter received the keys of the house, which includes two bedrooms, toilets, kitchen, hall and a work area, at a function held at Punekkadu Junction on March 23.

Elcon Builders, which constructed the house, will bear the entire expense of Rs 5 lakh. Seeing the plight of the woman whose husband deserted her when she was pregnant, the district administration had given three cents of land to the woman about two-and-a-half years back.

“We have been giving a share of our profits for charity and humanitarian work. This year, we decided to construct a house for the homeless and shortlisted 40 probable beneficiaries,” said Abin Ayyappan, MD of Elcon Builders.

A screening committee comprising eight persons finalised Ranju as this year’s beneficiary. “We plan to continue this in the coming years,” he said.

Abin’s parents A K Ayyappan and Rajamma Ayyappan handed over the keys of the house.

Block panchayat vice-president Vincent Illikkan inaugurated the function. Block panchayat member Jessy Mol Jose, Keerampara grama panchayat president Benny Paul, Y’s Men International regional director Joseph Koturan and Lensfed district president P D Anilkumar spoke.
