THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With the state government filing review and clarification petitions before Supreme Court on Wednesday, the uncertainty pertaining to the reinstatement of T P Senkumar as a state police chief looms large.

The government decided to challenge the apex court verdict favouring Senkumar which came out on April 24.  Though Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan informed Assembly on Tuesday the government was bound to implement the order, he later changed his mind to carry out a legal fight.

Sources said it was a last-minute decision taken by Pinarayi to encounter Senkumar legally. This process could delay the proceedings for a few more days before the SC goes for summer holidays on May 9.

The government can take this as an advantage to delay his reappointment as the summer vacation of the court will only end in July. Moreover, Senkumar’s service period will end on June 30, sources said.

Meanwhile, Senkumar told reporters that he did not want to go with a fight with the government. He also affirmed that he did not leak any records to the Opposition against the government.

On Tuesday, the government was sceptical on Senkumar in leaking the records against the government which he had used for legal battle. “I got the details of the reports of the government through RTI. The Opposition might have also got it through RTI,” Senkumar said.

T P Senkumar will have to be reinstated as state police chief as per the verdict of the Supreme Court, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is understood to have informed the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday. But before taking such a step, the government requires certain clarifications regarding it. The government has approached the Supreme Court with a revision petition in this regard. Once the court verdict on it is out, the government will act accordingly, the Chief Minister informed the Cabinet, outlining the steps taken by the government in the T P Senkumar issue thus far.
