KOLLAM: Dramatic scenes unfolded at Thalavoor St Mary’s Orthodox Church, near Pathanapuram after the body of an 88-year-old woman, who was buried on March 28 went missing from her grave on Sunday.
Alerted by the church authorities, Kunnicode Police rushed to the spot and launched investigation. The villagers who gathered at the church were relieved as the police unravelled the mystery and took the woman’s 55-year-old son into custody for digging up the grave and taking the corpse to his house. The body of Kunjeli Kunjappy was later found wrapped in a gunny bag in his house at Nadatheri, Mugalvila. According to the police, the man was mentally-challenged.

“As per church records, Kunjeli was buried on March 28. We suspect her son Thankachan might have entered the graveyard and dug up the grave on Saturday night. When we questioned him, Thankachan said his mother was still alive. He wanted to live with his mother. As we searched his house we found the body concealed in a gunny bag. There were only some bones and skull as the body had decomposed. Based on a complaint from the church authorities we registered a case. Thankachan was later released on bail,” the police said.
