Malayalam Vaarika’s social service award presentation today

KOZHIKODE: The Social Service Award 2017, instituted by Samakalika Malayalam Vaarika of The New Indian Express Group, will be presented to social worker V P Suhara of “Nisah” at a function to be held here on Saturday. The award carries a plaque, citation and a cash component of `1 lakh. The function will begin at 4.30 pm at Hotel Alakapuri.

Theatre artist Nilambur Ayesha will inaugurate the event in which Actor Mamukoyya will be the chief guest. Kerala Sahitya Academy Vice Chairperson Khadija Mumtaz and writer K M Seethi will be present on the occasion.  Since its inception, “Nisah” has been working towards achieving gender equality in Muslim society and abolition of practices like polygamy, triple talaq etc.

V P Suhara is a social worker and founder of Nisah, an organisation crusading for the rights of women. This year’s winner has been selected by a jury comprising writer Gracy, social critic and writer Hameed Chennamangaloor and media personality Pradeep Panangad.

Samakalika Malayalam Vaarika instituted the award in 2013 to honour persons who dedicate their lives to social service. Suhara has been working for the cause of Muslim women for the past four decades. The previous winners of the award were Raziya Banu, a social worker from Palakkad; V C Raju of Murikkasseri, Idukki; Krishnan Pallam, of Pattambi, who runs the destitute home ‘Abhayam’; and Sajini Mathews, who founded Snehabhavan at Muttam, Melukavu.
