12-yr-old is latest victim of ‘tipper terror’

A 12-year-old boy on Saturday was killed when a tipper lorry mowed down the scooter on which the child was riding pillion at Maradu here.

KOCHI: A 12-year-old boy on Saturday was killed when a tipper lorry mowed down the scooter on which the child was riding pillion at Maradu here. The deceased Vishal V Nair died of head injuries suffered in the accident. His mother Raji, who was driving the scooter, however, escaped with minor injuries. Vishal’s father was witness to the deadly accident as he was following Raji on his bike and it was he who rushed his grievously injured son to a private hospital nearby. However, Vishal was declared brought dead by the hospital authorities.

Both Raji and her husband are employed at the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology(CIFT) . The father, who is an administration officer with the CIFT regional centre in Vishakhapatnam, was in the city on vacation. The family was en route to Tripunithura from their home near Nucleus Mall, Maradu when the tragedy occurred. 

Vishal was the younger of the couple’s two children. He has an elder brother Vishnu V Nair, a Class X student at the Gregorian Public School  in Maradu where Vishal also studied. Vishal’s body was handed over to the kin after autopsy. His funeral will be held on Sunday, according to the relatives.

Amal, 22, hailing from Perumbavoor, the driver of the tipper lorry, was caught by the people who rushed to the scene of the accident. He was later handed over to the police and a case of rash driving was registered against him. He has been booked under Sections 304 (Causing death by negligence), 337 (Causing hurt by act ,endangering life or personal safety of others) and 279 (Rash driving on a public road).
