PALA:Ernakulam staged a strong comeback on the third day of the State School Athletics Championship at the Pala Municipal Stadium on Sunday, giving an impression they are marching in full strength to wrest back the overall champions title from Palakkad, who upstaged them last year.So far, the Metro district has bagged 28 gold, 11 silver and 16 bronze medals to reach 205 points against Palakkad’s 134 points and 16 gold, 10 silver and 20 bronze medals.

The third day also saw three new records being set. Of them, two were in the individual category. “In senior girls 100m hurdles, Aparna Roy of St Joseph’s HSS, Pulloorampara, clocked bettered the national mark by clocking 14.39 seconds. The previous national record was held by Kerala’s Dibi Sebastian. The Plus One student of St Joseph’s faced no challenge in her feat as she dashed to the finishing point pipping Aparna K Nair of Idukki to a distant second spot.

In junior boys 100m hurdles, Suryajith R K of BEMHSS, Palakkad created a new mark by finishing in 13.61 seconds. In sole lead since the start, Suryajith stretched the lead further in the last 20 m to enforce a comprehensive win over first runner-up Akhil Babu of SAI Thiruvananthapuram. The third record was set during the junior boys 4x100m relay in which Ernakulam flexed its muscles and won the race in 43.88 seconds, defeating Kozhikode which finished at the 44.07-second mark.

In the run for the champion school title, Mar Basil HSS, Kothamangalam, are far ahead with 57 points. They have won 10 gold, one silver and four bronze medals. Mathirappilly GVHSS are in second place with 46 points comprising six gold, five silver and one bronze medals. Kalladi HS, Kumaramputhur is third with 43 points.
