M Tech student commits suicide at NIT Calicut

KOZHIKODE: A first-year M Tech student of the National Institute of Technology at Calicut reportedly committed suicide in his hostel room on Saturday.

Police said the body of Arun Krishnan, 23, was found hanging in his hostel room at around 11 a.m. The student is a native of Aramam house, Madathinkara, Malayinkizh in Thiruvanthapuram. He joined the M Tech (Nanotechnology) course at NIT Calicut on June 28.

“The student was last going to his room at around 7.30 pm on Friday and did not come out of his room on Saturday morning. His room was locked from the inside and he did not pick up phone calls. Fellow boarders broke open the door and found him hanging from the window panes,” said circle inspector Biju K K of Chevayur.

The police officer said Arun Krishnan was rushed to the nearest hospital but he was declared brought dead. A suicide note was found in the room which reportedly said, it is more fun to die rather than live'.

Inspector Biju K K said a case of unnatural death has been registered and an has been started into the incident. “We will be recording the statements of his teachers and friends,” he added.

After the inquest, the body was shifted to Medical College hospital for a post-mortem procedure.

This was the second suicide by a student at NIT Calicut in the last three months. In July, a B Tech first-year student, Golla Ramakrishna Prasad, 17 from Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh, hanged himself in his hostel room. The police investigation found that he had been in depression.
