KOCHI: Putting an end to the uncertainty which prevailed over the encroachment of the backwaters by actor Jayasurya at Chilavannur Lake, the Kochi Corporation on Wednesday started demolishing the boat jetty and compound wall of the actor’s house. The Kochi Corporation’s action to demolish the illegal structures came after the tribunal for local self-government institutions rejected the actor’s plea against the demolishing the boat jetty and compound wall last month.

“Though the tribunal issued an order in February end we didn’t receive the copy. Only by March 27, we could receive the copy of the verdict. Based on that we decided to act against the illegal structure,” said A S Anuja, Corporation secretary who directed the Assistant Executive Engineer, Vyttila, to demolish the illegal structure. However, the compound wall will be demolished only after surveying the property. “The Irrigation Department had laid the stone.

Even the wall was constructed on top of that so the demolition can be started only after consulting the irrigation officials,” said a top officer with the Corporation. The actor’s illegal encroachment came to the news when a public activist named Gireesh filed a petition before the Muvattupuzha vigilance court against the actor. In his complaint, he had also alleged the actor also violated the building rules and Coastal Zone regulation rules for constructing the boat jetty and compound wall.

The Kochi Corporation issued an order for the demolition of the illegal construction after the taluk surveyor found out that the actor had encroached 3 cents 700 square links of backwater area. But the actor later approached the local tribunal against the Kochi Corporation’s order.“There are several encroachments in the city. The Corporation will take action against these without much delay,” said Mayor Soumini Jain when asked about the other encroachments in the city limit. Though Express tried to contact the actor, he was unavailable to comment on the issue.
