Political rivalry: Seven hurt in CPM, BJP attacks

Four CPM and three BJP workers were injured in two separate incidents, as both parties accused the other for the attacks.

KANNUR: Four CPM and three BJP workers were injured in two separate incidents, as both parties accused the other for the attacks. The first incident took place at Mattannur, near the old wine shop on the Mattannur-Iritty road, around 3.15 pm on Sunday. Four CPM workers were allegedly attacked and injured by a gang of RSS workers.

According to the police, P Laneesh, 32, P Latheesh, 28, T R Sayoosh, 34, and N Sarath were the CPM workers injured in the attack. They were admitted to AKG Hospital, Kannur.

The incident occurred as the CPM workers, coming to Mattannur from Iritty in a car, were stopped by the attackers who came on a bike. As they tried to escape from the attack by taking a turn, the attackers smashed the windscreen of the car with their swords and attacked them.

The assailants then escaped from the spot leaving the bike behind. The blood stained sword which was used to attack the CPM workers was later recovered from a bush near Ashraya Hospital.  

Latheesh and Laneesh were accused in a case in which the house of a BJP worker was attacked. They were remanded in the jail and it was only last week that the duo got out on bail.

On hearing the news, Iritty DySP Prajeesh Thottathil, Mattannur CI Joshy Jose and SI  Sivan chodoth reached the spot. Meanwhile, three BJP workers were admitted to Thalasserry Indira Gandhi Hospital with injuries as CPM workers allegedly hacked them.

According to the police, P V Sachin, 24, of Nellunni; KV Suji, 21, of Mattannur; and PV Vijith were the persons admitted in the hospital. The BJP leadership alleged they were attacked in Mattannur on Sunday evening by CPM workers who came in a car. The three were riding on two bikes, said a BJP leader.
