THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A Board meeting of the A P J Abdul Kalam Technological University held at its headquarters here on Saturday extensively discussed the ways to expand mini-fab labs to 50 more engineering colleges in the state.

The move followed the Express report earlier this week on the varsity mandarin's reluctance to introduce new courses and sitting on a plan to establish mini-fab labs at engineering colleges.

"We discussed the matter based on the news report and a letter by Board member Sanjay Vijayakumar, the Startup Village founder. Many proposals were made at the meeting. Fab labs was one of the items on the agenda. At present, mini-fab labs are set up at 20 engineering colleges. We'll study the matter seriously," said Radhakrishnan, a Board member. Vijayakumar was not present at the meeting.

An academic reforms committee has been constituted at the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University to improve quality of technical education by providing guidance to students who are below average in academics.

As a first step, the committee will identify and monitor students who failed to pass the examinations. In the second step, they will provide them with skills training and guidance.

The officers said new courses in the curriculum were also on the anvil. The Board members nominated renowned economist and educationist V K Ramachandran as the university’s next vice-chancellor. However, two more bodies — state government and AICTE — have to nominate a person and only after that the vice-chancellor can be elected. The Board meeting was led by vice-chancellor in-charge J Letha.
