Landslip on Mannarkad-Attappadi Ghat Road

The heavy rain and the gale-force winds lashing the district on Wednesday triggered a landslip on the Mannarkad-Attappadi Ghat Road, resulting in mud, rubble and uprooted trees blocking free movement

PALAKKAD: The heavy rain and the gale-force winds lashing the district on Wednesday triggered a landslip on the Mannarkad-Attappadi Ghat Road, resulting in mud, rubble and uprooted trees blocking free movement of traffic at several places along the stretch.

At the 10th curve of the Ghat Road, a tree came down resulting in mud and rubble being strewn all over. With the movement of traffic blocked, a long line of vehicles, including buses and cars, were seen waiting for the debris to be cleared.

PWD officer Sreelekha said the Fire Force and police personnel are working to clear the debris and restore traffic at the earliest.

The PWD has already informed there will be traffic curbs in force along the stretch from Wednesday 6 pm- 8 am on Thursday to ensure hassle-free operations to clear the debris.

Movement of traffic was also hit for one hour after the Bhavani burst its banks, flooding the roads in the Ghat section. Similarly, the bridge at Thavalam across the Bhavani, which connects the region with Pudur panchayat was flooded. In Aanakal ooru also, the bridge across the Bhavani was under water.

Similar disruptions were reported from Nelliampathy, Palakkad and Kadakaamkunnu regions of the district. In Nelliampathy, a tree came down near the Kunder Chola disrupting traffic for one hour. The Fire Force personnel later removed the tree.

At Palakkad,  the waters of the swollen Bharathapuzha were touching the banks in Pattambi and Cheruthuruthy.  In Kadakaamkunnu, the Nilampathy bridge was under water and several people gathered there to watch nature ‘raining’ its splendour.

The Parli-Kottayi causeway has also been overflowing, resulting in the roads being submerged, disrupting traffic.
