Student Police Cadet goes national; announcement tomorrow

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:It is a moment of great cheer for Kerala. The Student Police Cadet project of the state will soon be implemented across the nation. Home Minister Rajnath Singh will announce the nationwide implementation of the programme at Gurgaon, Haryana, on Saturday.

State Police Chief Loknath Behera said requests are being received from a plethora of schools in the state to start the programme, but it is the financial constraints that play the dampener. The idea is to implement the project in as many schools as possible, he said.

It was in 2006 the Student Police Cadet Programme started its pilot run in Kerala. The programme was envisaged with the aim of inculcating discipline and aiding in personality development among students. After it was observed the programme aided the growth of the children in such fronts and that it has been able to instill social values among them, it was implemented across various schools in the state. The present government’s tenure saw the implementation of the programme in 71 schools. At present, more than 50,000 students figure in the programme and it has been implemented in 645 schools.

After the successful implementation of the programme in Kerala, the project was implemented in Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka and Rajasthan. It was on his visit to Kerala in 2016 that Singh learned about the programme and decided to implement it across the country.A 26-member team comprising students and teachers are set to travel to Gurgaon to witness the national-level announcement of the programme.
