Kerala cabinet to wind up Munnar Special Tribunal 

The procedure for transferring the cases currently being handled by the tribunal and disposing them will be finalised by the government in due course.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Cabinet has decided to wind up the Munnar Special Tribunal constituted to adjudicate on land disputes in Munnar. According to the government, the tribunal was being folded up as it did not achieve its aims.

The procedure for transferring the cases currently being handled by the tribunal and disposing them will be finalised by the government in due course. The Munnar Special Tribunal was established in 2011 for the adjudication of disputes in respect of land in the villages of Chinnakanal, Kannan Devan Hills, Santhanpara, Vellathooval and Aanavilasom in the Munnar region.

The number of cases actually settled by the tribunal was very low, the government said on Wednesday. According to the report of the Kerala High Court Registrar, it succeeded in disposing off only 42 cases. The Subject Committee of the Kerala Assembly also had recommended that the tribunal be folded as it did not achieve its aims.

G3 lakh for local bodies to undertake sanitation work

T’Puram: The Cabinet meeting on Wednesday decided to sanction up to D3 lakh for local bodies to undertake sanitation work once the flood waters recede. This is aimed at preventing communicable diseases. The money will be allocated based on the report submitted by the District Collector concerned. Further, the meeting also decided to set up a web-portal as a single-window clearance mechanism for providing approvals to telecom service providers for laying optical fibre cables on roads in the state. The IT Mission has been assigned with the job of establishing the web portal. The approval will be given on the condition that the telecom company will restore the road once the work is over.

Compensation to kin of Ratheesh, Muneer

The Cabinet decided to sanction D8 lakh each as financial assistance to the kin of Ratheesh of Chembilodu, Kannur and Muneer of Valapattanam who died while cleaning a septic tank. The families had been sanctioned D2 lakh each earlier.

92 new teacher posts

Ninety-two new posts of teachers will be created for the following engineering colleges: Barton Hill Engineering College in Thiruvananthapuram and the government engineering colleges in Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Wayanad, Kozhikode and Kannur. Four posts of assistant professors will be created for the Government Arts and Science College, Thazhava.

New aided college

The Cabinet gave the go-ahead to establish an aided college at Edanji in the Parassala Constituency of Thiruvananthapuram district. The college will be named San Thoma Malankara Arts and Science College. The post of a principal and three assistant professors will be created for the college.

Salaries of various Akademi secretaries unified

The salaries of secretaries of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi, Kerala Lalithakala Akademi, Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi and the Kerala Folklore Akademi have been unified at D50,000 with retrospective effect from April 1, 2018.

Ockhi compensation allocation ratified

The Cabinet ratified the allocation of D1.65 crore as compensation to fishermen who lost fishing equipment in the Ockhi cyclone in November 2017.
